What Is Public Relations

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

On a recent Teleclass, Mid Year Marketing Review, (which will be on the website in a few days), an attendee asked what public relations is.  It’s a great question and we go into detail about it on our Teleclass called Create a World Class Marketing Plan

But think of it this way, with advertising you pay, with public relations you pray.  I have a marketing friend that always used to say that and its true.  PR keeps your name and business out front in the eye of the community, but its costs very little or nothing.  It can involve committees, associations or sponsorships. PR can be:

  • Writing articles for a paper that benefits the readers
  • Press releases
  • Public speaking
  • Support within your community
  • Donation of Time / Services

PR provides outstanding long term benefits to your business ; it increases your credibility and can build greater brand awareness.  Be sure to include PR as one of the elements to your World Class Marketing Plan.

How Long Should Your Article Titles Be?

Friday, April 24th, 2009

writingI read something interesting today.   According to an article recently from EzineArticles.com, when writing you should consider expanding your article title by forty percent (40%). The evidence suggests that longer article titles produce more views per article vs. short article titles.  I found that to be interesting since I do usually try to keep my titles short.

Also, the longer article titles can increase your reprint rate and value. The narrower the focus, the more specialized the reprint website and the more qualified the visitor/reader. This results in a greater referral rate of traffic to your website.

We do a lot of writing so we are are always trying to learn ways to make our writer more effective.  Give this a try.

Social Media Is Finally Making Sense To Me

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

It would be very fair to say that I have been fighting some of this social media craziness for a while now.  My fear is that I don’t need one more thing in my day that takes up time rather than benefiting metwitter_logo_125x29.  I am very protective of my time and don’t have a need for an overwhelming amount of communication.  That said, I recognize when change is happening and I don’t think I have seen anything like this in a while.   It’s a frenzy alright; feels more like a cult.

Here are some facts:

  • Facebook has 200 Million Members.
  • YouTube visitors are viewing 13 Billion Videos a month.
  • LinkedIn has over 15 Million Businesspeople networking.
  • Twitter is growing at over 40% a month.
  • Digg and Delicious are driving millions of visitors to websites every month. (I don’t even know what these are)

So you can’t deny there is something going on here.  I either need to get on the bus or be left far behind.  In an effort to better understand this frenzy, I’ve been attending some social media events and have learned some info to help me better understand this.  Here are some my learnings thus far:

  • Social media is a listening community.  Provide good content that is valulable and relevant and a “tribe” will follow.
  • Have an engaging home base.  This means have a place for people to go, from FB or Twitter, that is interactive.  Like you own blog.
  • Be real, honest and transparent.  People will see through you otherwise.
  • Build a network online, but grow it offline.
  • All boundaries are broken in terms of a client can now come from any city, country or continent.
  • Give and take; don’t just take from conversations.  Give back to them and in turn, get a lot.
  • Don’t be a one night social media stand.

So what dofbes this mean for me.  Well, I don’t think you will ever find me constantly “tweeting” as that’s just not for me.  But I do see the benefits in terms of meeting really smart people, making connections I would have otherwise not made and potentially making contacts with anyone, anywhere.  That I can get my hands around and will dedicate some time too.

We know our members have many questions about social media so we putting together a SM TeleSummit called From Prospects to Profits: Thriving Using Social Media.   If you are overwhelmed with the social media frenzy, attend the TeleSummit and get all your questions answered in our mutli-day conference all from the comforts of your own home telephone.  If you want to be the first to know about it, let us know at info@aredbench.com.  We will be announcing it very soon!

Take Advantage Of Every Opportunity

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’ve had Savvy Solutions for almost five years, but 1 1/2 years ago I moved to a new city.  Being new to Vancouver, I had to start my business over completely.  The only person I knew was John, my husband.  I had to get out there and start networking and meeting as many people as I possible could and you know what?  Its been a year, but its starting to work.

I want to remind you to take advantage of every opportunity and get involved.  Don’t let anything that may help you grow your business slip by.  Since moving here, I have gotten involved with the Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce (my neighborhood chamber).  My good friend Kirsten Severson, owner of KLS Trademark Services, is the VP and she is also responsible for events.  I started helping her out at events and have gotten to know many members.  Its been great!  Recently she got me a meeting with the Executive Director, Terry Clark. I am thrilled to announce Terry has asked me to provide an organizing and productivity workshop for the chamber on June 18th.  (More details will be announced soon, but the event will take place at the Watermark Restaurant on Kits Beach, June 18th at 7:30am.)

The only reason the opportunity is available to me is because I got involved.  Be sure you are doing what you can to give back, get involved and take advantage of every opportunity.   Sometimes, its the simplest efforts that pay off in the end.

Ways To Boost Your Clients Energy

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

My good friend, Susan Polano with Send Out Cards recently forwarded a great article to me.  It was by nutrition and healthy expert, Jonny Bowden.  To my surprise in his article titled, 7 Ways To Boost Your Energy he mentions organizing.

Jonny #6 way to boost your energy is to “De-clutter and deep-six the energy drain.?  Jonny states, “Here’s a rule I’ve found to be a universal truth: your energy has a perfect inverse relationship to the accumulation of stuff you don’t need. The more unwanted, unused, unneeded stuff you have cluttering up your life, the less energy you have. Believe it or not, the condition of your desk (and desktop) and office and living space actually reflects a lot of what’s going on in your head.  If you take time to organize and de-clutter, you’ll actually be freeing up a lot of psychic space, and that can really turbo-charge your energy.”

That’s good stuff I wanted to pass along.  Get organized and get a burst of energy.
