Facebook Safety Tips

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Yes, Facebook is yet another tool for small business owners to reconnect with old friends and establish new contacts. It can often be a delicate mixture of our business life with our personal life. I don’t know about you, but I started Facebook without a users manual and have fumbled my way along learning as I go. Trying to find a way to balance my “business friends” with my “family friends”.

Fortunately, there are a number of experts who are sharing their wealth of Facebook knowledge. I found this great article on preserving your privacy on Facebook. I never realized there were so many options. Did you know that you can create groups so that certain people can view a photo album while others can not? Did you know you can control who can post a message on your wall and even who can see certain messages on your wall?

There is some great information here especially for those who are trying to balance using Facebook for both business and personal reasons. Let us know what you think?  Do you have the right balance in Facebook?  Do you use if for business, personal, or both?

In case you have not heard, social media is HOT, HOT, HOT!   In case you don’t know, social media is using social networking web-sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or a blog to increase marketing and gain clients or sales.  It’s a lot to keep up with and a lot to learn about if you have not kept up with this rapidly growing trend.

Here is a great article LinkedIn, Twitter & YouTube: Stories of Social Media Success for Marketing & Sales  that my friend Claire Keeling recommended.  This article sheds some light on why social media is important and some creative ways to use it.

Understanding Social Media

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

As you know the world has gone nuts with social media. I am on Facebook, Twitter and several other online networking sites.  Sometimes, I am not sure why I am doing this, but there must be a reason.  I recently had the opportunity to speak to Krista Colvin of Organize in Style, and a finalist in the category of Best Organizing Blog at the LA Organizing Awards, about this very topic.  I was asking her about the difference between Facebook and Twitter and she told me Facebook is my past meeting my present and Twitter is my present meeting my future.  Very interesting.

I do have intentions for each of these outlets, but hearing this from Krista really helped me better understand how I should be using these two tools.  We hope to have Krista on a teleclass very soon.
