Reminder: Organize In Your Own Learning Style Teleclass

Thursday, September 30th, 2010
Hellen Buttigieg

Don’t forget!  There are only a couple of days left to register for our next teleclass!  Join us on Monday, October 4th at 10 AM EST, as we speak with Hellen Buttigieg: Certified Professional Organizer, Life Coach, host of HGTV’s Neat, and author of a new book entitled Organizing Outside The Box.

Hellen will speak to us about teaching ourselves to organize based on our personal learning style.  As Hellen says in her book, “Organizing isn’t one size fits all.  there are many ways to organize your space, your time, and your life.  In general, no one way is better or worse than another.  No two people are alike: A useful organizing tip may not work as well for you as it does for someone else.  It might even make matters worse.”

On this call, you will learn:
  • What a ‘learning style’ is and what the different types of learning styles are.
  • How to figure out what learning style you or your clients use most.
  • Factors that will help us understand what someone’s learning style is.
  • How to pick organizing systems that compliment and work with your style.
  • How tailoring your organizing solutions to learning style increases the organizing success of your clients.
  • How to run a more efficient home and office by understanding the styles of family and co-workers.

The Art of Auto-Reply

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I’m heading off for vacation this week and it reminded me of a great e-mail auto reply that we received here at A Red Bench.  It was written by Leslie Shreve with Productive Day.  What I love about this is that it is not your typical auto-vacation reply.  She stays in line with her branding and what she does while being fun and grabbing some attention.

I hope this gives you a little inspiration.  Read Leslie’s auto-reply below:

“Greetings!

I’ve been so productive,
Getting things done,
Now it’s time for a break,
To enjoy sand and sun.

I’ll be on vacation
For a week or more,
Mostly at the beach,
On the Delaware shore.

I’m forgetting about time,
To recharge and relax,
Checking e-mail only once
Before I get back.

Enjoy your long weekend,
For the 4th of July,
I’m off from June 26th,
Until the 6th of July.”

To your productivity and success!

Letting Go Through Giving

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

As a Professional Organizer, I’ve found that one of the best ways to get people to let go of clutter and other items is to find what motivates them.  Some people are motivated by money or by time, and some are motivated by helping others.  Often people acknowledge that they don’t need or want certain items, but are hesitant to just throw or give them away when ‘they might come in handy someday’.

When I received this bulletin from Hope Alliance (a local shelter for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault) last month, I knew that it would be a great way to not only help people get rid of items they didn’t need but couldn’t let go of, but also to give to a very worthy cause. So I “organized” a Toiletry Drive with the help of a couple of local businesses, allowing people to easily drop off items that meant little to them but would make a big difference to someone else in their community. Just running the drive for two weeks, we collected over 200 items and inspired someone else to do a drive of their own.

Likewise, there are probably a variety of organizations in your area that would be overjoyed to receive usable items that are currently just clutter in your clients’ homes, either through individual donations or a similar local drive.  Many women’s shelters need unused toiletry items (things like toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, and bottles of shampoo and lotion) and old cell phones to give to women without resources of their own.  There are charities that hand out well-cared-for toys to children whose lives have been turned upside-down by disaster or illness.  And most animal rescues would be happy to take those towels that no longer match your decor, toys that didn’t catch Fido’s interest, or the hamster cage that’s been gathering dust in the attic since the kids were young.

If you have a client who is reluctant to give, then you may want to contact a shelter or community center in your area and find out what kind of items they collect.  This could be the key to helping your clients have a breakthrough and start letting go for a cause that means something to them.
